The Stuttgarter Vogelsang Bach arises when Birkenkopf on the Hasenberg in the red forest , fed originally Vogelsangsee, flows underground today culverts , on the northern side of the old city of Stuttgart over over the Seewiese and upper castle garden in the Nesenbach .

Since the late Middle Ages, three lakes to the west and north of the city have been artificially created in the Vogelsangbach valley: the Obere See, for example between Weimar and Seidenstrasse, the Mittlere See or Büchsensee, between Seidenstrasse and Schloßstrasse, and the Lower Lake located between Holzgartenstrasse and Schloßstrasse. The Büchsensee and the Untere See were dammed in 1390 and 1440 respectively. The former covered approx. 2.7 hectares, the latter approx. 11 hectares. Both lakes were drained at the beginning of the 18th century and built over in the 19th century. They were used primarily for fish farming, but also for washing and as a fire fighting water reservoir.

There is not much to see of the Vogelsangbach above ground. After an old clinker canal, in which its water had flowed since 1907, had to be rehabilitated, a new underground canal was laid in Fritz-Reuter- and Vogelsangstraße in 2011. It runs through concrete pipes with a diameter of 1.2 m at a depth of 5 to 15 m. This canal now follows the course of the street or is laid under a green area, while the old, now filled in canal also ran under private properties and even the market hall .
