history

Vokolida was before the occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkish military forces in 1974 Greek Cypriots inhabited. In the 1960 census, 337 Cypriot Greeks were counted, in 1973 there were 336. Most of them fled after the invasion of the south of the island, 31 Cypriot Greeks remained. But they also left the place, by August 1976 at the latest.

Today Bafra is inhabited by Turks who emigrated to the island from mainland Turkey. These came from Adana , Osmaniye and Erzurum . In 1978 there were 146 Cypriot Turks , in 1996 there were 290, in 2006 their number rose to 514, in 2011 it was already 1019. This rapid growth is due to hotel buildings in the region, which brought many workers to the town. In 2006 the beds in Vokolida / Bafra had a capacity of 3,000 guests, 10,000 are planned.
