Volker Bräutigam (born May 23, 1939 in Frohnau / Erzgebirge ) is a German composer and church musician .

biography

Bridegroom was a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor , at that time under the direction of Rudolf Mauersberger . From 1957 to 1962 he received his training in church music and composition at the Leipzig Conservatory , the latter with Johannes Weyrauch . He was the first student who dared to make the music of Olivier Messiaen known, although it did not correspond to the ideas of the GDR regime.

After his studies, Bräutigam was a church musician at the Heilandskirche in Leipzig-Plagwitz for over 30 years . Since 1980 he has been a lecturer at the University of Music in Leipzig and since 1981 also at the University of Church Music in Halle / Saale . He was appointed professor in 1993. He made a name for himself as a concert organist in Europe, the USA and Japan.

His compositional work is stylistically diverse. In addition to his admiration for the neo-baroque church music by Siegfried Reda , Ernst Pepping and Johann Nepomuk David as well as for the works of Messiaen, influences from early music and jazz can be seen . In addition to choral and organ works, he also created music for DEFA cartoons .

Volker Bräutigam and the musician Maria Bräutigam are the parents of the cantor Christiane Bräutigam .
