Volker Hömberg (born July 25, 1954 in Wevelinghoven ) is a German neurologist .

Live and act

Hömberg studied medicine from 1973 to 1980 at the Universities of Düsseldorf and Freiburg im Breisgau . He took neurology electives at Boston City Hospital, Boston , Massachusetts , and at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, London. From 1975 he worked as a junior scientist in the Institute for Neuropsychology with Gerhard Grünewald at the Cécile and Oskar Vogt Institute for Brain Research in Düsseldorf. He completed his clinical training with Hans-Joachim Freund at the Institute for Neurology at the University of Düsseldorf, where he became senior physician in 1985 .

In April 1987 Hömberg became Medical Director of the Neurological Therapy Center (NTC), Institute of the University of Düsseldorf, and in 1997 of the Neurological Therapy Center in Cologne. In 1993 he completed his habilitation with Hans-Joachim Freund at the University of Düsseldorf in neurology. In 2000 he became chief physician in neurology at the St. Mauritius therapy clinic in Meerbusch, which was newly established on his initiative . From 2003 he became their medical director. By 2010 he led the clinic to a rehabilitation facility with a far-reaching reputation. In 2011, Hömberg moved to the SRH Health Center in Bad Wimpfen , where he took over the neurology department and built up the neurological rehabilitation department.

Professional political activity

In 1989, Hömberg was one of the founding members of the German Society for Neurological Rehabilitation (DGNR), along with Karl-Heinz Mauritz , Wolfgang Gobiet, Hans H. Janzik, Klaus Mattes, Wolfgang Tackmann, Arne Voss and Rolf Radzuweit, and took on the office of Vice President from 1989 to 1998 , from 1998 to 2004 that of the President and from 2004 to 2010 again the office of Vice-President. He is still a member of the DGNR board today. On his initiative, position papers were published on securing the future of early rehabilitation, on improving the quality of care in neurorehabilitation through modern quality management and on the introduction of scientifically based rehabilitation techniques, as well as special guidelines for the training of doctors and therapists and for the certification of the quality of care in neurorehabilitation facilities. In line with the idea of ​​inclusion, Hömberg helped found the Federal NeuroRehabilitation Association, of which he has been deputy chairman since it was founded in 2005. Hömberg has been Executive Director of the World Federation for Neuro-Rehabilitation (WFNR) and the European Federation of Neurorehabilitation Societies (EFNRS) since 2003, where he coordinates the organization of the regularly held international congresses and is an active member of the WFNR's Flying Faculty. In 2004, Hömberg was appointed to the board of trustees of the ZNS - Hannelore Kohl Foundation at the suggestion of Ute-Henriette Ohoven . On his initiative and with his participation, the series of events of the Foundation's International Scientific Symposia was created. In 2011, Volker Hömberg was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Stroke Foundation .
