Volker Steffens

Volker Steffens (* 1948 ) is a German educator and headmaster of the Thomas-More-Oberschule in Berlin-Neukölln . He became known nationwide for his courageous behavior in the case of the reactions to the honor killing of the Turkish-born German Hatun Sürücü .

career

In 1971 Volker Steffens became a teacher at the Thomas-More-Schule, whose vice-principal he became in 1980. Since 1996 he has been the rector of this high school.

The Hatun Sürücü case

Hatun Sürücü was murdered on the street in Berlin in February 2005. The honor killing was greeted with applause from several students from Thomas More High School. The headmaster Volker Steffens responded with an open letter to the students, parents and the teaching staff. This triggered a broad discussion in the media.

Honors

In August 2005, Federal President Horst Köhler sent Volker Steffens a letter of thanks for his courageous behavior . On December 10, 2005 he was awarded the Neukölln Badge of Honor. According to the Berliner Morgenpost , Volker Steffens is one of the 50 most important Berliners of 2005.
