In the same year, Luchterhand published Bauer's first book The Parallel Class: Ahmed, Me and the Others - The Lie of Equal Opportunities. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote: "Every German education politician should read the book, after all, 'The parallel class' shows, like in a burning mirror, that Germany is a flawless class society when it comes to education policy."

After Timm Klotzek and Michael Ebert left , Bauer took over the editor-in-chief of NEON and Nido together with Vera Schroeder in 2012 . When the publishing house Gruner + Jahr decided to move the editorial offices to Hamburg , Schroeder and Bauer decided against going along with the publisher management about the future strategy for both magazines due to content-related differences and gave up their positions at the beginning of 2014.

Bauer became an author for Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin in May 2014 . In 2015 he and the photographer Andy Kania won the Hansel Mieth Prize for his report “Wet and Violence” about everyday life in the “Columbiabad” outdoor pool in Berlin-Neukölln . In 2015 Rowohlt published Bauer's second book The Beginning at the End of the World - Story of a True Love , which is based on the love story of his grandparents and tells in three time levels of a young man who travels from post-war Germany to the Caribbean and becomes a local there in love.

In November 2019 Bauer published the book The dream is over. But we will do everything to make it a reality., A reconstruction of the Alexanderplatz demonstration on November 4, 1989, about which the Welt am Sonntag said it was "one of the most beautiful obituaries of that small country that simply cannot be saved was.
