Volker Tiemann (born September 16, 1963 in Kiel ) is a German sculptor .

life and work

After graduating from high school in 1983 and completing a stonemason internship, Volker Tiemann studied fine arts from 1986 to 1992 at the Muthesius Art College in Kiel with Jan Koblasa . In 1989 he received an Erasmus grant to study at the Norfolk Institute of Art and Design, Norwich (Great Britain). Volker Tiemann is a member of the German Association of Artists . He lives as a freelance artist in Kiel.

Tiemann belongs to a generation of younger artists who, on the one hand, see their roots in classical sculpture and, on the other hand, adopt radical new positions that at the same time critically question this medium. Right from the start, the artist's work captivates with their humor and apparent lightness, which, however, seems to stand in stark contrast to the elaborate craftsmanship and technical perfection of their realization. The superficial joke in the viewer quickly gives way to existential thinking about art, people and the world.

Volker Tiemann succeeds with his works, which expand into expansive scenarios in exhibitions, " pushed and in rapid succession, to override moments of reality for moments in order to enable the viewer to reflect on reality an experience and knowledge, which the outside world can no longer offer him in this immediacy . ”( Arne Rautenberg : Thoughts on the imitation of reality for the purpose of restoring the pure view, in: If nobody sings, then it's quiet , Kiel 2004, p. 13).

Volker Tiemann's work has a broad spectrum of sculptural gestures, which also venture into areas of the pictorial and photographic and, with their montage of heterogeneous materials and found objects, add their own position to contemporary sculpture.

There are works of art and there is the rest of the world. In between there is a border area with transitional solutions. “Said Tiemann on the occasion of his exhibition in the Brunswiker Pavilion in Kiel, which was set up for him in 2005 as a prize winner at the state show of the BBK Schleswig-Holstein.

In 1999, the NDR dedicated a portrait to the artist with the film “Calculated Improvisation” as part of the exhibition and film series “Art forays in Schleswig-Holstein” (director: Michael Engler).
