Volksbank Hohenlohe eG is the oldest cooperative bank in the world that still exists on site. The world's oldest known credit cooperative is the Privatsparkasse zu Lerbach, which dates back to the 18th century, which merged in 2006 and which is now part of Volksbank im Harz.

The history of Volksbank Hohenlohe eG goes back to 1843. On August 27, 1843, citizens of Öhringen founded the “Öhringer Privatspar- und Leihkasse” and laid the foundation for the development of today's Volksbank Hohenlohe with their idea of ​​“helping people to help themselves” eG. It was not until six years later, in 1849, that Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch founded his first cooperative. In 1859 Schulze-Delitzsch recognized the founding of Öhringen as a "Volksbank" according to his principles. In the 1990s, Volksbank Hohenlohe eG expanded its business area through mergers, most recently in 2003 (with Raiffeisenbank Pfedelbach ). This is how today's Volksbank Hohenlohe came into being. In 2018 Volksbank Hohenlohe eG celebrates its 175th birthday.
