history

The adult education center was founded by resolution of the Hamburg citizenship in 1919. The institution was intended to reduce educational privileges and contribute to the development of democracy .

The first director of the Hamburg Adult Education Center was Rudolf Roß . He was followed by Kurt Adams in 1928 . Adams was in 1933 by the National Socialists dismissed. Kurt Meissner was one of the personalities who shaped the adult education center in the Federal Republic of Germany . Meissner took up the post of director in 1967 and held it for 22 years.

In 1989, the Hamburg adult education center , which is subordinate to the school authorities , became the state enterprise of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

The Hamburg Adult Education Center offers around 9,000 courses every year . With more than 112,000 bookings per year, the adult education center is the largest general training provider in the Hanseatic city .

The courses offered take place in rooms that the adult education center itself has, as well as in schools and other buildings in Hamburg.

The spectrum of offers at the Hamburg Adult Education Center ranges from German courses , so-called basic training courses in the areas of reading and writing , arithmetic and writing on the PC , to the implementation of naturalization tests .

Courses are offered to strengthen professional skills in the areas of multimedia , photography , web and IT .

In addition, events are held that address topics from the areas of society and politics or health and the environment .

Cultural education courses, language courses and cooking courses can also be taken.

More than 1000 course instructors ensure the implementation of the adult education program.

Fees of different amounts are charged for the individual courses . Reductions in fees are possible on request.
