history

In 1946 the adult education center in Menden was founded. Two years later, the VHS Hemer began its service, the first director of which was the head of the Friedrich-Leopold-Woeste-Gymnasium , Rudolf Deidert. After 21 courses and seminars in the first semester of 1948, the number of events fell significantly after the currency reform in 1948 . In the early 1950s, the number of courses increased again.

The VHS Menden-Hemer-Balve was formed in 1975 through the merger of the previously independent adult education centers of the three neighboring municipalities in order to be able to cover a wider range of topics together. The head of the responsible association is currently the Mayor of Hemeran Michael Heilmann , who is also a member of the VHS administrative board. His counterparts from Balve and Menden are also members there.

For the Landesgartenschau Hemer 2010 , the VHS trained the 60 official tour guides and offered 100 additional courses on the LGS site.

Hans-Hermann Stopsack from Hemer was the head of the VHS Menden-Hemer-Balve for many years. In 2003, Peter Gausepohl took over the management, who was replaced by Achim Puhl after retiring in 2011. Lena Schwerdtner has been the VHS director since January 2020.
