content

For his film, Gameau subjected himself to a self- experiment on the occasion of the pregnancy of his life partner : he ate at least 40 teaspoons of sugar a day for 60 days (including soft drinks ), just like the average Australian citizen.

The film shows his preparations for the experiment and its consequences, for example examinations by a doctor and his discussions with a nutritionist; health problems are not long in coming when he is eating, although it is combined with exercise. After the 60 days, Gameau gained 8.5 kg, his body fat increased by 7% and his waist was swollen by 10 cm.

Furthermore, Gameau reports on the general consequences of excessive sugar consumption, both health and social, by illustrating the situation of Aborigines who suffer kidney failure from compulsive and uncontrolled sugar consumption . He also travels to the United States and witnesses a chronic Mountain Dew consumer having all his teeth pulled.

The film also mentions a term from the food industry that describes the optimal composition of an industrially manufactured product: Once the so-called " happiness point " has been reached, the food should taste particularly good, regardless of its ingredients. The American market researcher and psychophysicist Howard Moskowitz did pioneering work in this area .

At the end of the film, Gameau replaces the sugar with healthy fats and breaks down his bacon rolls again.

Hugh Jackman , Stephen Fry , Isabel Lucas , Brenton Thwaites and Gary Taubes are among the guest roles in the documentary.
