The Vorarlberger Rheintalbinnenkanal or just Rheintalbinnenkanal is a river that flows parallel to the Rhine in the Alpine Rhine Valley and contributes significantly to the drainage of the Lower Rhine Valley on the eastern, Vorarlberg side. On the western, Swiss side of the Rhine there is also an inland canal for draining the Rhine Valley, which is known as the Rhine Valley Inland Canal .

In the form of an artificially created drainage canal , the Rheintalbinnenkanal leads from its origin in the municipality of Koblach , where the river is still referred to as the Koblacher Canal , following the course of the Rhine parallel to it via the town of Hohenems , where the river name changes, to the municipality of the market town Lustenau on the influence in the Dornbirn Ach .

The canal serves to drain the area between the catchment areas of Frutz and Dornbirner Ach. As a result, no further rivers flow into the Rhine between the tributary of the Ehbach near Koblach / Meiningen and its confluence with Lake Constance near Hard on the Vorarlberg side. The Rheintalbinnenkanal thus not only relieves the Rhine, but also prevents backwater from building up in the tributaries when the Rhine floods, which would lead to flooding of the surrounding areas.

history

The idea of such an inland canal first appeared in 1840 in a drainage plan for the lower Vorarlberg Rhine Valley by district engineer Martin Kink . The first section through Koblach, Mäder, Altach and Hohenems was built in 1845. The plan for the further course to Lake Constance was changed several times, so in 1874 the municipality of Lustenau in Vienna raised an objection to the derivation of the canal through the middle of the Lustenau area and achieved a shift of the route east to the border with Dornbirn. The second section was officially opened on April 27, 1910, and passed the first practical test on June 15 of the same year during a flood.
