The ring wall fore fort is a Celtic fortification ( oppidum ) on the quartzite spur of the same name in the Black Forest high forest southwest of Börfink , in the Buhlenberg district , in the western district of Birkenfeld , above the deeply cut Traun valley . There are several similar Celtic fortifications in the area: the much larger ring wall of Otzenhausen on the opposite Dollberg , smaller ones on the neighboring ring head near Allenbach and the Wildenburg near Kempfeld . The pre-fort is on the Trauntal-Höhenweg, a dream loop of the Saar-Hunsrück climb in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park .
The ramparts and their meaning
The ring wall fore fort is the remains of a Celtic hilltop settlement, built by the Treveri , probably between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC. It served the population of this area as a refuge for people and livestock during times of war. The ring wall made of quartzite boulders is an oval, approx. 80 m wide and approx. 120 m long, comparatively small system of approx. 1 ha.
present
The facility is open to the public all year round, preferably from Börfink on a gradually rising asphalt forest path (no passage for motor vehicles). However, it is not handicapped accessible. At a viewpoint above a Rossel heap there is a reclining bench. At the lookout point there is a board that provides information about the geology of the pre-fort, on the Trauntal-Höhenweg a board briefly informs about the history of the pre-fort. The legend of the "Princess in the fore-fort" is also reproduced on this board .
