Vreni Kneubühl (born May 19, 1920 in Herzogenbuchsee ; † January 1, 2007 in Burgdorf ) was a Swiss solo yodeler and course instructor, director, actress and reciter of Bern German literature.

Life

Vreni Kneubühl grew up in the artisanal atmosphere of his parents' blacksmith shop. Even while still at school, Vreni yodeled at family reunions and on excursions and learned to play the organ. She had her first appearances and was actively involved in a traditional costume and a theater group. The young yodeler received a “Müntschi” on the cheek from Federal Councilor Rudolf Minger for her lecture at a federal parliamentary group dinner at the “Bären” in Eggiwil . Nevertheless, she initially did an apprenticeship as a dressmaker, but worked in the “Moderne” tea room in Bern .

She had been married to Fritz Kneubühl, an employee in father's forge, since 1941. From 1944 they lived in Landiswil in the Emmental and rented a blacksmith's shop. Vreni Kneubühl attended a business school and managed the company's commercial affairs, was responsible for bookkeeping and all administrative matters, but also for board and lodging for employees and apprentices.

In addition, she was involved in theater performances for the music society. In 1943 Vreni joined the Bernese-Cantonal Yodelling Association BKJV. In the same year she received a “very good” for the song “Der Hüeterbueb” by Jakob Ummel at the Bern Yodelling Festival . In total, Vreni took part in no less than 57 yodelling festivals and always earned a “very good”. In 1955 the Kneubühls moved to Burgdorf, where they ran a locksmith's shop from 1960.

She died of heart failure.

Act

Vreni Kneubühl met the well-known composer Jakob Ummel in 1943. The two top yodelers made over 100 recordings and numerous radio and television recordings. During her yodelling career from 1937 to 2000, Vreni Kneubühl's repertoire comprised over 250 songs and yodel chants for solo and duet on over 200 records. In 1982 she played a gold record .

In the 1950s Vreni was the yodeler for the famous Aemmitaler Chörlis Burgdorf. From 1970 she often appeared in a duo with her son Urs. Folklore tours have taken her to Holland, Japan and the USA.

With her powerful voice, unique larynx strokes and her natural interpretation of songs, she sang her way into the hearts of yodellers for decades.

In 1982 she was honored with various honorary memberships and awards such as the culture recognition award of the city of Burgdorf. The Bernisch Kantonale Jodlerverband (BKJV) granted the tireless promoter of yodelling singing free membership in 1981, the Swiss Federal Yodelling Association (EJV) shortly thereafter in 1985.
