action

Matt McLaughlin and his team of tunnel workers who refer to themselves as "Sewer rats" (originally "Sandhogs") are working underground in New York City on new tunnel systems for the city's water supply when they are struck by earthquakes. Some workers are seriously injured or killed when boiling acid shoots from pipes that were supposed to be used for cooling water. Lava also flows into the tunnel. The remaining construction workers can escape to the surface, but Matt is deprived of team leadership due to the incident. The following night, three homeless people died of sulfur dioxide poisoning in a park and a fishing boat exploded in New York Harbor . The FBI classifies the incidents as terrorist attacks and begins an investigation. Dr. Susan Foxley, Matt's ex-wife, is tasked with investigating what happened in the tunnels. Together with Matt she goes into the said tunnel and discovers that the incidents seem to have geological causes.

In a factory in the city, Dr. Meanwhile, Levering secret geothermal experiments. He wants to drill a hole through the earth's mantle to supply New York with energy. When the well penetrated to a depth of seven miles, the experiment spiraled out of control and triggered several seismic incidents. This reactivates inactive volcanoes under the entire city, the magma of which is now pushing to the surface. Matt and Susan try to convince the mayor of the danger of a volcanic eruption, but are rejected. Then they investigate on their own and discover the factory of Dr. Levering. He has them captured and tied up when the well goes completely out of hand and the workers flee in panic. You are just about to break free and escape the hall when the building explodes. Eruptions occur throughout the city, killing thousands of people.

Now the mayor also recognizes the danger, but it is too late to evacuate the city. Matt and Susan propose to divert the lava flow into the sea by blasting the tunnels and thus save the city. The mayor agrees, and the remaining "sewer rats" go underground. During the operation you will be attended by Dr. Levering attacks, but they manage to escape and divert the lava flow at the last second.
