Guard houses on the Semmering Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list leads the guard houses on the Semmering Railway in their order from Gloggnitz station to Mürzzuschlag station. The railway line, built from 1848 to 1854, was accompanied by a total of 55 guard houses, 47 of which are still preserved. Most of the guard houses are owned by the Austrian Federal Railways and, along with the line itself, are under monument protection and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Semmering Railway.

The guard houses were erected as two-story stone buildings within sight. They served the railway guard and his family as a place of work and residence. The guard houses have long since lost their operational functions; today they are used as residential and weekend houses, and quite a few are empty. In some cases there is no connection to public infrastructure such as water, electricity and road networks.

architecture

The architect Moritz von Loehr , who has been in the service of the Imperial and Royal State Railway since 1842 and has been entrusted with handling the structural engineering of the entire state railway network from 1848 , was responsible for the buildings of the Semmering Railway, including the guard houses. He was assisted by the Imperial and Royal Senior Engineer and Head of the Building Construction Department at Semmering, Johann Salzmann , who, together with the Imperial and Royal Engineer I. Classe Franz Czerwenka, was responsible for the on-site construction project.

Wilhelm von Flattich , sometimes mistakenly named as the architect of the guard houses , did not join the Southern State Railroad until 1855, which later became the Southern Railway Company .

The guard houses and station buildings along the Semmering Railway are sober functional buildings with little decoration. A large part of the guard houses is made of exposed stone masonry. Its simple, two-story, cubic shape with a saddle roof and the varying square or round gable windows are characteristic. Decorative elements are scarce: brick overlays over windows and doors, brick rosettes around the gable windows, details on the chimney heads, ornate rafter and purlin heads . The aim was " to burden the monitoring and maintenance of the buildings with the lowest possible loads " ( Martin Gschwandtner, 2001 :). The size of the guard houses is quite uniform, it is 10.67 × 8.60 m with a fluctuation width of only 10 cm in both directions.

With their uniform style, the guard houses are forerunners of the standards set in the building construction norms in 1856 , which ensured a corporate design for the railway buildings.

In the course of time, some houses were structurally changed slightly (e.g. number of windows) or plastered.

numbering

Originally the guard houses from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag were numbered from 1 to 55 in ascending order. From 1881 the numbering from 120 to 202, which is still used today, was introduced; it also lists other high-rise buildings starting in Vienna, resulting in several gaps in the numbering of the guard houses.
