Geographical location

Wüstenfelden is located in the south of the Casteller municipality. To the north lies the district of Greuth, in the northeast the area of the Geiselwind market begins . To the southeast and south is the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim , to the northwest and west Castell . In the outskirts of the village is the Sandberg , which at 481 m is one of the ten highest peaks in the Steigerwald .

The closest larger cities are the former district town of Scheinfeld, about 10 kilometers away, and the large district town of Kitzingen , which is about 15 kilometers away.

history

The village of Wüstenfelden got its place name because of the desolate fields after the clearing. This is where the first settlers built their houses. Wüstenfelden was built as a planned clearing village , the original plot structure can still be seen today. Other interpretations assume that there was a sanctuary of the Germanic goddess "Westa", "Wista" or "Vesta" on the nearby Schlossberg .

"Wustvildin" was mentioned for the first time in 1248. The place name changed steadily in the following years, so the village was called "Wüstefeld" in 1497. Wüstenfelden was divided up between the brothers Heinrich II and Hermann I zu Castell in the partition agreement of 1258 , so that the village had two mayors for centuries. Equipped with an important source of drinking water , the village was important for both lines of the House of Castell and supplied the entire county with water.

Count Heinrich's line later pledged its possessions to the Margraves of Ansbach . The northern part of the village, previously in the hands of the descendants of Count Hermann, changed hands in 1457. Count Wilhelm II zu Castell ceded the village as a fief to the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. During the Reformation , the village division had a particularly negative effect. The Würzburg part remained Catholic, Ansbach became Protestant. Not until 1546 was the denomination released to residents.

By 1555, Wüstenfelden had finally become a predominantly Lutheran village. Since 1584 the parish has been subordinate to the church in Castell. The place was previously looked after by Stierhöfstetten . It was not until 1680 that Count Wolfgang Dietrich zu Castell-Remlingen managed to bring the village back into the possession of the counts. Four years later, in 1684, the village, initially acquired only as a fief, was converted into an allodial property of the Counts of Castell.

In the course of mediatization at the beginning of the 19th century, Wüstenfelden came to the Kingdom of Bavaria . Wüstenfelden became part of the large municipality of Castell in 1977. Before joining, the municipality of Wüstenfelden managed to implement some improvements in the infrastructure. In the meantime, the drinking water source of the old county was polluted due to high nitrate levels and so Wüstenfelden was connected to the Franconian long-distance water supply until 1992.

narrative

In Wüstenfelden it was an old custom to spin the collected flax together and people from the surrounding villages also used this opportunity to exchange ideas with the Steigerwalddorf. So it happened that a girl from Ziegenbach forgot the time while spinning and it was already night. Two boys from Wüstenfelden offered to accompany her home through the forest. The next day the girl's body was found and the forest was henceforth called Mordgrund.
