W. Craig Broadwater

Willard Craig Broadwater (born August 8, 1950 in Elk City , Oklahoma , †  December 18, 2006 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) was an American lawyer . After his appeal by President Bill Clinton , he served as a federal judge in the federal district court for the northern district of West Virginia from 1996 until his death in 2006 .

Career

After graduating from high school, Craig Broadwater attended West Virginia University , where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972 . He then served in the US Army until 1982 and reached the rank of Lieutenant . During this time he completed his legal education in 1977 with a Juris Doctor at the College of Law at West Virginia University and then practiced as a lawyer in Wheeling until 1983 . In 1976 he ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for the West Virginia House of Representatives . Between 1978 and 1981 he was an investigator for the stateWorker's Compensation Fund . From 1982 to 1983, Broadwater served as special attorney in Ohio County before Governor Jay Rockefeller appointed him as a judge on the West Virginia Circuit Court for the first district. He held this post until 1996.

On January 26, 1996, Broadwater was appointed Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia by President Clinton to succeed Robert Earl Maxwell . After confirmation by the US Senate on July 12 of the same year, he was able to take office 14 days later. He died of complications from cancer on December 18, 2006 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and was buried in Oxford Cemetery in Doddridge County . His seat fell to Gina Marie Groh .
