The 1st WSF World Cup took place from May 28th to June 1st, 1996 in Petaling Jaya , Malaysia . A total of 16 teams took part in the squash tournament, the prize money was 70,000 US dollars.
In the first edition of the tournament, the teams of England , South Africa , Egypt and Australia qualified for the semi-finals. In these, Australia prevailed against South Africa and England against Egypt with 3-0 each. In the final, the Australian team defeated England with the same result.
From the German-speaking area, only Germany took part, which took second place in its group behind Australia and ahead of Hong Kong and Singapore . In the subsequent games against Canada and New Zealand , the team secured fifth place in the overall standings.
The participating teams competed in four groups. The group played in round robin mode and the group winners advanced to the semi-finals. This was carried out in the knockout system . All places were played out. All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of five players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per match, with two men's and one women's game. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.
