The 533 meter high WTVM-WRBL television broadcast mast is located near Cusseta , Georgia , USA approximately 20-25 miles southeast of Columbus , GA.

history

This mast was originally located in Columbus, Georgia, behind the WRBL television studios on 12th Avenue. The foundations are still there. It was originally not 533 meters high, but only about 366 m. The additional 167m was added after the mast was moved to Cusseta.

Both WTVM and WRBL transmitted the image signals from the studio to the transmission mast in Cusseta using directional radio . There was a direct line of sight between the aerials in the studios and the receiving aerials on the transmitter mast in Cusseta. At the beginning there were often problems with winds that adjusted the antennas and there was often icing. After icing, it had to be adjusted manually at times. This was also necessary to align the antennas.

business

After the 533 meter high transmission mast was completed, WDAK-TV WTVM and the transmission frequency were changed from channel 28 to channel 9. WRBL-TV also changed its transmission frequency from channel 9 to channel 4. The new WTVM-WRBL transmission mast could now transmit undisturbed within a radius of 70 to 80 miles.

In the vicinity of the WTVM television transmission mast, at 32 ° 19'16.4 "N, 84 ° 47'28.2" W, the Cusseta Richland Towers Tower has been another guyed transmission mast since 2005 , which even exceeds the WTVM television transmission mast in height.

record

The WRBL-WTVM transmission mast was the tallest structure on earth for 16 months. In September 1963, the construction of the WBIR transmitter mast in Knoxville , Tennessee - also 533 meters high - was completed.

Three months later, in December 1963, the 628 meter high transmission mast for KTHI (original callsign) in Fargo , North Dakota, became the tallest structure on earth. By March 2008, this transmission mast had regained the title of the tallest structure on earth after the 648-meter-high Radio Warsaw transmission mast of the long-wave transmitter in Konstantynów , Poland , which was the tallest structure on earth from 1974 to 1991, collapsed on August 10, 1991 .

With the completion of the Burj Khalifa , the record holder of the tallest building in the world was replaced.
