Wachauer Künstlerbund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wachauer Künstlerbund was an artists' association from 1919 to 1978 based in Krems an der Donau .

The association was founded on September 19, 1919. The aim was to create a forum that organized joint sales exhibitions. Furthermore, the “local art preservation” should be promoted by “addressing other circles of art lovers” and bringing them closer to the “artistic beauties of the Wachau”.

Members (selection)

Eligible to join were artists resident in the Wachau , as well as artists born there, who “stayed in artistic contact with their closer home through their work”. Extraordinary members could become "foreign artists who have contributed to the glorification of the Wachau through their artistic work". Painters, architects, sculptors and craftsmen could become members.

Exhibition of guests

The following artists, among others, were invited to exhibit their works:

Exhibitions

The first exhibition took place in Krems at Christmas 1919, and a total of 40 exhibitions followed by 1939.

Aside from regular exhibitions in Krems, the Künstlerbund also presented itself in Sankt Pölten (1921, 1923, 1926), Wiener Neustadt (1924) and Vienna (1921, 1927). Since 1925, exhibitions have taken place every year in the summer months in the west wing of the Dürnstein Abbey .

Club history

The first club bar was in the electricity works (Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Ring 15). From 1926 to 1936 the association was based in the offices of the Citizens' Hospital on Obere Landstrasse.

In 1960, the artist association received an exhibition pavilion in the Krems city park (design: Rupert Schweiger).

In spite of all efforts, the great days of the guard painting were over. The Wachauer Künstlerbund dissolved on January 15, 1978, and the pavilion now serves as a gallery.
