Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea ( 大海 原 と 大海 原 Oōnabara to Wadanohara ) is a video game from 2013 by the developer Deep-Sea Prisoner that was programmed using RPG Maker 2000 . The game was implemented as a manga in 2015 .

The young water witch Wadanohara and her friends Fumika, Dolphi and Memoca return to the Deep Sea Kingdom after a long journey on the surface, with the shark boy Samekichi trying to prevent them from returning. It turns out that another kingdom wants to invade the Deep Sea Kingdom and conquer it. Wadanohara and her friends set out again to repair six orbs that keep their home safe.

It later turns out that the conquest of the Deep Sea Kingdom by the Kingdom of Totsusa is an intrigue of the army of the Sea of ​​Death, who started the dispute between the two kingdoms in order to gain power over the Deep Sea Kingdom themselves.

To make matters worse, Wadanohara has lost her memory and has to start looking for possible clues to her memory loss.

Game principle and technology

In Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea is a fantasy - RPG , in which the player using keyboard can control the characters. The game world is largely linear , but changes from time to time to an openly explorable world . The combat system is turn-based and characters can become stronger by winning battles. It is possible to equip the characters with armor and weapons to increase their fighting power. The playable characters are also able to use magic .

The game was programmed using RPG Maker 2000 for Windows systems, but under certain circumstances it can also be played on MacOS .

In August 2015, the game's developer, Kaitei Shujin, also known as Deep-Sea Prisoner, published an adaptation as a manga online via Gene Pixiv , before being converted into a paperback by Kadokawa Shoten a little later .

In 2017 it was announced that Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea had been licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment for the English-speaking market. The complete manga appeared in a single volume in July 2017.

Comic book writer Chris Butcher voted Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea the Worst Manga for Anyone during a panel discussion of the worst and best mangas of 2018 at San Diego Comic-Con International .

Age rating

In Germany there is no official age rating for Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea by the entertainment software self-regulation (USK). However, the programmer of the game himself made an age recommendation from 15 years and older based on various representations in the various possible endings of the game. Kadokawa, meanwhile, put an end to the manga adaptation that is suitable for readers of all ages. On VGPerson.com , an age recommendation from 18 was made, as extreme scenarios such as sexual abuse and violence are at least hinted at later in the game.
