Wade Barnes

Wade Edward Barnes (* 15. August 1954 in Brooklyn , New York City ; † 3. March 2012 in New York City) was an American jazz - drummer , composer , music producer , arranger , who headed 17-and music educator as head of Brooklyn Repertory Ensemble became known.

Life

Barnes first learned to play drums informally; his mentor was Beaver Harris , who let him play at the Village Vanguard at the age of 14 . He earned bachelor's degrees from Empire State College and Queens College and a master's degree in music from Vermont College, Norwich University . At the beginning of his career he has been teaching music at the Brooklyn Conservatory since 1982 , where he developed the jazz program, and at other schools. He didn't become a professional musician until 1996, working with Doc Cheatham , Candido , Earle Warren , Dicky Wells , Howard McGhee , Jimmy Garrison , Bob Cranshaw , Archie Shepp , George Coleman , Sonny Fortune and Jon Faddis . In 1997, Meet the Composer commissioned him to compose the work From Slavery to Freedom , a suite dedicated to the historian John Hope Franklin .

After performing in schools as Brooklyn Four with Cecil Payne , Leonard Gaskin, and Joe Knight, Barnes founded the nonprofit Brooklyn Four Plus One, Inc. in the late 1990s, which later became the Brooklyn Repertory Ensemble . With this orchestra he recorded the albums Passport to Brooklyn (2002) and Pragmatic Optimism (2007). He also led the formations Bottom Line (who performed with Bertha Hope in 2011 ), Unit Structures and Word on the Street . Between 1975 and 2006 he was involved in ten recording sessions, including a. by Cecil Payne and by Pucci Amanda Jhones / Hilliard Greene . Barnes, who was also chairman of the Andy Kirk Research Foundation , died after a long illness.
