Wadih El Safi

Wadih El Safi ( Arabic وديع الصافي, DMG Wadīʿ aṣ-Ṣāfī ; * November 1, 1921 in Niha ; † October 11, 2013 ) was a Lebanese singer , songwriter , composer and actor .

El Safi completed a classical music education at the National Conservatory in Beirut and began his musical career at the age of seventeen when he won a singing competition on the Lebanese Radio. He performed at festivals and concerts in the Middle East and became one of the most popular singers in his country as the "voice of Lebanon" with around 3000 songs. He was also active as a stage actor and appeared in several films. He spent the time of the Lebanese Civil War in France. In 2013 he died of complications from a lung disease.

Honors

  • On November 1st, 2016, for his 95th birthday, El Safi was honored with a Google Doodle .
