Vadim Vasilyevich Blagodarew
Vadim Wassiljewitsch Blagodarew ( Russian Вадим Васильевич Благодарев ; * 1843 ; † 1890 ) was a Russian navigator , explorer of the Bismarck Sea and captain of the first rank (from 1887).
Life
Between 1861 and 1865 Blagodarew sailed around the world, stopping at the mouth of the Amur .
Between 1869 and 1877 Blagodarew made two trips from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean and back: as a lieutenant on board the clipper “Almas” ( Алмаз , German diamond ; 1869–1872) and as a lieutenant captain on board the steam corvette “Askold” ( Аскольд ; 1872-1877).
From 1882 to 1885 he made another sea voyage in the Pacific Ocean as commander of the corvette " Skobelew " ( Скобелев ). The officers of the "Skobelew" described the northwestern part of Astrolabe Bay in the Bismarck Sea , discovered the Alexei Bay and various smaller islands; one of them was named Skobelev Island in honor of the corvette.
