The Wagensonnriegel is a 959 m high rock bar in a small, subordinate ridge of the Bavarian Forest near the villages of Rinchnach , Kirchdorf im Wald and Frauenau .

There is a small chapel, a summit cross and a few benches on the frequently visited rocky summit . The view goes south and west to the nearby Gsengetstein and Rinchnach. Several marked hiking trails lead to the summit, for example from Kohlau, Zimmerau, Frauenau, Althütte , Klingenbrunn or Waldhaus. The Wagensonnriegel is also accessible by bike.

Planning of wind turbines

In the summer of 2014, plans by Stadtwerke München became known to erect 24 wind turbines on the site , although the entire area is considered a landscape protection area. The Bürgerenergie Freyung-Grafenau eG cooperative is also planning wind turbines on Wagensonnriegel.

The wagon sun bolt came up for discussion in 2012 as an alternative for another area in the municipality of Kirchdorf im Wald, as the designation of a priority area on the wagon sun bolt prevented the wind turbines that were not wanted in the Grünberg area.

The wind energy priority area 43, in the center of which is the Wagensonnriegel, measures 1700 hectares and is the largest priority area in Bavaria. Stadtwerke München planned systems with a hub height of 141 m and a rotor diameter of 117 m, corresponding to a total height of almost 200 m. Depending on the implementation of the minimum distance of ten times the height to the next development (the surrounding communities were able to vote on this), Stadtwerke München planned at least 14 and up to 24 wind turbines. At the end of August 2014 the citizens' initiative Bärnzell - Against the construction of wind turbines in the Wagensonnriegel wind farm area was founded. The opponents feared up to 100 wind turbines on the priority area.

The plants planned by the Bürgerenergie Freyung-Grafenau eG cooperative are located in the Bavarian state forests . This would only allow the necessary use if the communities of Frauenau and Spiegelau were each in favor of the project. The municipality of Frauenau carried out a public survey on April 26, 2015 before the required municipal council resolution. With a turnout of 40%, 76% of those who voted were against, 24% in favor of the wind turbines on the Wagensonnriegel. Following this vote, the Frauenau municipal council spoke out with 13: 2 votes against the application of the Citizens Energy Freyung-Grafenau eG cooperative for approval of the conclusion of a site security contract with the Bavarian State Forests for the construction of wind turbines.

In its council meeting on July 1, 2015, the city of Zwiesel decided to take legal action against the change in the regional plan , in which priority wind power area 43 was defined. The lawsuit is intended to check the legality of the priority area designation and ultimately prevent the planned construction of wind turbines.

In July 2015 the Stadtwerke München announced that it would put its plans "on hold" until further notice due to the widespread opposition from the population. Following the example of the Frauenau community, the Spiegelau community carried out a public survey on the wind power plants planned by the Bürgerenergie Freyung-Grafenau eG cooperative . In the Spiegelau council meeting on August 1, 2015, the date for the survey was October 11, 2015; in the vote, 79% of those who voted were against the wind farm planning.
