Wagit Alekperov (2011)

Wagit Jussufowitsch Alekperow ( Russian Вагит Юсуфович Алекперов ; Azerbaijani Vahid Yusif oğlu Ələkbərov or alternatively Vahid Yusif oğlu Älakbärov ; born  September 1, 1950 in Baku , SSR Azerbaijan ) is a Russian entrepreneur of Azerbaijan . He is the founder, largest shareholder and boss of the mineral oil company Lukoil .

Life

Alekperov grew up as the fifth child of a poor Azerbaijani oil worker family. When he was three years old, his father died of long-term effects from injuries in World War II . Between 1969 and 1974 he studied at the Azerbaijan Institute for Oil and Chemistry "Meschadi Asisbekow" and graduated as a mining engineer . Alekperov's career began in 1968 as a laboratory worker in the hydromechanical laboratory of the Azerbaijani Research Institute for Oil Production . 1973–1974 he worked as an oil production worker for the oil and gas company Kaspmorneft in the oil fields of the Caspian Sea . During this time, he experienced an explosion on an oil rig that threw him twelve meters deep into the sea. He was able to save himself thanks to his good swimming ability.  

Between 1987 and 1990 he worked as general director of the production association “ Kogalymneftegaz ” at the Ministry of Oil and Gas Industry of the USSR . In 1990, Alekperov rose to the position of First Deputy Prime Minister of the Soviet Oil and Gas Industry. After the collapse of the Union, he participated in the founding of the state-owned oil company LangepasUraiKogalymneft (Lukoil), which had converted into a joint stock company in 1993. Since then, Alekperov has served as the company's president and chairman of the board , where he is also represented on the executive committee. According to Bloomberg, Alekperov had assets of around $ 22 billion in 2019.
