description

Wagner's Oregon grape is an upright evergreen shrub that is 2.5 meters high . The leaves are up to 20 centimeters long and consist of 7 to 11 leaflets; these are oval-elongated and have 4 to 7 teeth on each side. They are glossy deep green on the top and a little lighter on the underside. The flowers are yellow and are up to 8 centimeters long, densely covered axillary racemes. The berries are spherical in shape and have a bluish tinge.

use

Wagner's Oregon grape is rarely used as an ornamental shrub in gardens and parks; different types are known:

  • 'Moseri' has pale green, pink to red tinged leaves
  • 'Pinnacle' is up to 1.5 meters high and is characterized by dull bluish gray-green leaves, bronze-colored when shoots; numerous pure yellow flowers. This variety is also known as Mahonia 'Pinnacle', as Mahonia aquifolium 'Fascicularis' or as Mahonia pinnata ( Mahonia pinnata is the correct botanical name for the leaved Oregon grape ).
  • 'Undulata' with glossy dark green leaves that are wavy on the edge and turn red-purple in winter.
  • 'Vikaryi' has similar characteristics to the variety 'Pinnacle' and sometimes turns red in autumn.
