Location Wagshurst as a district of Achern

Wagshurst is a district of the large district town of Achern in the northern Ortenaukreis , on the edge of the Black Forest in the Upper Rhine Graben .

Gerd Boschert is currently the mayor of Wagshurst.

history

Wagshurst is probably a village of Alemannic origin. Franks fought for control of Wagshurst. In 1070 the village was given to the Bishop of Strasbourg by the Franks. From then on Wagshurst stayed with the Court of Strasbourg until the Treaty of Luneville. On October 28, 1136, Pope Innocent II confirmed in a bull that Schuttern Abbey in Wageshurst had some realities and income. This is considered to be the first written mention of Wagshurst. It was not until 1803 that Wagshurst passed to Baden. From 1809 Wagshurst was an independent municipality, which was subordinate to various district offices until 1972. Wagshurst initially belonged to the Appenweier district and came to the Achern district in 1819. When the district of Achern was dissolved in 1924, Wagshurst, like the other districts of Achern, came to the Bühl district office and in 1939 to the Bühl district. On January 1, 1973 Wagshurst was incorporated into the city of Achern as part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg.

Place name

The suffix -hurst means something like bushes, bushes, hedge etc. This local ending is common in the area south of the Murg in the area around Bühls and Achers, but probably comes from Lower Saxony, which can be seen from the fact that this local ending is much more common there . It is therefore assumed that Saxon settlers who came to the area through forced resettlement brought the ending with them. In various documents since 1136 Wagshurst can be found in various spellings, such as "Wageshurst" (1136), "Wahsseshurst" (1233) or "Wagshurst" (1550). The place name Wagshurst probably means something like the "Hurst des Wago".
