Wahiawā (German also: Wahiawa ) is a census-designated place in the center of Oʻahu , the main island of the US state Hawaii . It is located 30 km from Honolulu and is connected to the island's capital by Interstate H-2 . It has 17,821 inhabitants (2010 census).

history

In the 18th century the plain at Wahiawā was used by Hawaiian chiefs as a training ground for their armies until it was conquered by King Kamehameha I in 1795 . In the 19th century, animal husbandry became more and more important. Towards the end of the century the land was divided into parcels for agriculture and sold to new settlers. One of these was James Dole , who came to Wahiawā at the age of 22 after studying agriculture at Harvard University and bought a 64- acre property in July 1900 on which he wanted to plant pineapples . So far only sugar cane has been grown in Hawaii. He founded the Hawaii Pineapple Company and raised $ 50,000 in capital from California investors for the project. He converted his barn in Wahiawā into a canning factory. Two years later, he began using hand-operated machines to produce his first cans of pineapple. The Dole Food Company emerged from this company .

In 1906, the Oahu Railway and Land Company extended its rail line to Wahiawā. In 1909, the Schofield Barracks Military Reservation , the largest US Army base in Hawaii, was established on the outskirts . On December 7, 1941, she was attacked by the Japanese Imperial Air Force . As a result of the attacks in World War II , the Wahiawa General Hospital was established in 1944 .

In 1977 the highway to Honolulu was completed.

Demographics

In 2017, the population was 17,600, of whom 41.1% are Asian, 23.6% multiracial, 12.6% white, and 9.6% native Hawaiians and other Polynesians . The median household income is $ 57,910 and the median price of a single family home is $ 526,880.
