Wahns is a district of the town of Wasungen in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

geography

Wahns is located in the valley of the Katza in the Vorder Rhön , around 12 kilometers from the district town of Meiningen .

history

The place was first mentioned in the 9th century as Wanesdorf . In the early Middle Ages the place belonged to Cent Friedelshausen , which became a fief of the Würzburg monastery until 1297 and 1330, 1335 . Through repeated pledging it came into the possession of the Counts of Henneberg . Around 1350 the place belonged to the office of sand . Around 1470 the place is said to have been desolate. The church was also looted and was not renewed until 1584. The Thirty Years War had devastating effects . In the three parishes belonging to the parish of Katz, 250 people died of the plague between 1634 and 1635.

Wahns was affected by the persecution of witches from 1622 to 1677 : two people got into witch trials , the outcome of the trial against Valentin Dahn is unknown. Catharina Scharfenberg received a church sentence in 1677.

In 1668 the village again had 58 inhabitants. For centuries agriculture was the main source of income for the residents. With the industrial development in the nearby towns of Meiningen and Wasungen, most of the residents found employment there. 1708–1710, today's listed church was built.

From 1829 to 1869 the place belonged to the administrative office Wasungen and then to the district of Meiningen in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen . From 1920 the place belonged to the Free State of Thuringia.

On January 1, 2019, the municipality of Wahns was incorporated into the city of Wasungen. She belonged to the administrative community Wasungen-Amt Sand .
