Waihi Beach is a coastal resort and resort in the Western Bay of Plenty District of the Bay of Plenty region on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The place is located around 10 km southeast of Waihi and around 37 km northwest of Tauranga in the western part of the Bay of Plenty . The place can be reached via a country road directly from Waihi or from Athenree via a coastal road. Both places are connected to the New Zealand State Highway 2 .

history

Māori settled here a long time before the Europeans arrived. Numerous fortified villages ( ) were within a few kilometers of Waihi Beach . European settlement began in earnest with the discovery of gold in 1870. However, the ores proved difficult to access and the only profitable mine for many years was Martha Mine in the city of Waihi . At the end of the 19th century, the mining company builthuts for their workersat the north end of Waihi Beach . The healthy sea climate was supposed to cure their lungs, which had been badly damaged by working in underground mining - this is how the place Waihi Beach came about.

In the 2013 census, the town had 1935 inhabitants, 9.0% more than in the 2006 census.

tourism

Waihi Beach and the nearby Bowentown settlement at the west end of Tauranga Harbor are popular vacation spots . Hiking opportunities, picnic areas and the beach for swimming and water sports attract numerous tourists in the summer months.

natural reserve

The dunes behind the beach are under nature protection and access routes to the beach are regulated and signposted. To the north of Waihi Beach is the 145 hectare Orokawa Scenic Reserve , which can be accessed by hiking trail.
