Waipara is a village in the Hurunui District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The village is located around 12 km north-northeast of Amberley and around 54 km north-northeast of Christchurch in the plain of the Waipara River . Culverden is around 32 km north and Cheviot is around 50 km northeast.
population
At the 2013 census, the town had 267 inhabitants.
economy
The area around Waipara is a wine-growing region. Pinot noir , Riesling and Chardonnay are predominantly grown. Waipara has the highest summer temperatures and the lowest rainfall of any New Zealand wine-growing region .

Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through the village and the New Zealand State Highway 7 branches off to the north from it a little south of the village .
Rail transport
The South Island Main Trunk Railway also runs through Waipara , where the TranzCoastal , which runs between Picton and Christchurch , has a stop. Another railway line, the Weka Pass Railway , has its base in Waipara and runs from here 12 km to Waikari . It uses the route of the former Waiau Branch , a branch line of the South Island Main Trunk Railway to Waiau .
Education
With the Waipara School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2013, 40 students attended the school.
Attractions
- To the south of the village is the Glenmark farm . The ruins of the house, the stable, the caretaker's house, and another building are recognized monuments by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust .
- The St. Paul's Anglican Church is an Anglican church in the north of the village, which was built as the commemoration of the sheep farmer George Henry Moore.
- Julius von Haast discovered moa bones near Waipara in 1867 . In 1939, five well-preserved skeletons of the extinct bird were recovered from a swamp near the Waipara Bridge .
