Wakefield , also called Wakefield Village , is a place in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The place is located about 20 km southwest of Nelson in the valley of the Wai-iti River . The New Zealand State Highway 6 runs through Wakefield and connects the place with Richmond and Nelson in the northeast and in the southwest with the places in the mountains inland.

history

The settlement was founded in 1843 under the name " Pitfure ", but a short time later renamed " Wakefield " after the city of Wakefield in Yorkshire, England . The place was created in connection with the settlement and establishment of Nelson by the New Zealand Company in 1842. Later the name was also associated with Arthur Wakefield , who was an agent of the New Zealand Company and a well-known figure in Nelson s early settlement history .

In the 2013 census, the town had 2,106 inhabitants, 12.1% more than in the 2006 census.

Education

The oldest public school in New Zealand is still in operation. This school was founded on October 8, 1843 by the Nelson School Society under the leadership of Matthew Campbell and opened on January 1, 1844 as a Sunday school with about 30 children.

economy

In addition to modest tourism, the community lives mainly from agriculture, fruit growing (berries, increasingly also viticulture) and wood processing.

  • Wakefield has several landmarks registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust .
  • The Painton House Museum is dedicated to local history.
  • In the nearby Pidgeon Valley there is the small Pigeon Valley Steam Museum with historic steam engines.
