Waldemar von Prussia, full name Joachim Friedrich Ernst Waldemar von Prussia (born February 10, 1868 in the Kronprinzenpalais , † March 27, 1879 in the New Palace , Potsdam), was a member of the House of Hohenzollern .

Life

Prince Waldemar was the sixth child of the future German Emperor Friedrich III. and his wife, the British Princess (Princess Royal) Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland . Through his mother he was a grandson of Queen Victoria and her Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha .

Prince Waldemar was the favorite son of the Crown Prince couple. He was a lively and happy boy and loved playing pranks on his family, especially his siblings. His passion was the large number of animals that he was allowed to keep. On a visit to the Crown Prince's family in England, he was allowed to take his crocodile with him, which then caused a great uproar among the Queen, as it was suddenly at her feet.

Traditionally, the prince entered the 1st Guard Regiment as a lieutenant at the age of ten . On 10 February 1878 he was succeeded by his grandfather I. Kaiser Wilhelm in the Black Eagle added.

On Waldemar's eleventh birthday, his mother wrote to Queen Victoria about him:

He is such a lovely child & although he is spirited and sometimes not easy to control, he is so reliable and honest ... If Heaven spares him I am sure that he will be loved everywhere & that he will be trusted becomes. "

At the end of March 1879, Prince Waldemar fell ill with diphtheria and died of the consequences of the disease.

After his death, Prince Waldemar was buried next to his brother Prince Sigismund, who had died in 1866, in the Sigismund Chapel in the Peace Church in Potsdam . After the completion of the Kaiser-Friedrich-Mausoleum, the coffin was transferred there. Reinhold Begas was commissioned to manufacture a marble sarcophagus . Today Prince Waldemar rests on the left in the apse of the mausoleum.

In the Blue Salon of Hohenzollern Castle hangs a picture by Waldemar that his mother painted around 1878.
