Walkerburn is a village in the north of the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders or in the traditional county of Peeblesshire . It is located around eleven kilometers east of Peebles and twelve kilometers west of Galashiels on the left bank of the Tweed .
history
Walkerburn is a relatively young town. The textile industrialist Henry Ballantyne ran various textile mills in the area in the 19th century. He developed the village as a home for his workers. The villas Stoneyhill House and The Kirna still bear witness to the life of the industrialists . In the course of the 20th century, the textile industry in Walkerburn lost its importance. Today a museum shows the textile history of Walkerburn.
With the industrial boom, Walkerburn's population rose to over 1,000 in the course of the 19th century. The decline of the industry sparked emigration. While in 1961 there were still 863 people in Walkerburn, the number of inhabitants fell steadily to 647 by 2001. An increase to 700 was found in the 2011 census survey.
traffic
The A72 running between Galashiels and Hamilton is Walkerburn's main road. In 1864 Walkerburn got its own station along the Peebles Railway . When the line was closed in February 1962, the station was closed.
