Wallace Hamilton Browne, Baron Browne of Belmont , MLA (born October 29, 1947 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish politician of the Democratic Unionist Party and life peer .

life and career

Browne was born to Gerald Browne and Phyllis Hamilton Brown. He graduated from Queen's University Belfast .

He worked as a school teacher. From 1970 to 2000 he taught biology at the Rainey Endowed School in Magherafelt .

Browne had been a member of the Belfast City Council for the Victoria borough since 1985 . In 1993 he was there Alderman . From 2002 to 2003 he was High Sheriff of Belfast. From 2005 to 2006 he was mayor ( Lord Mayor ) of Belfast.

In 2007, Browne was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly for the constituency of East Belfast . He is a member of the Somme Association's Trustee . He became a member of the National Association of Schoolmasters (NASUWT) in 1972.

Browne lives in Belfast .

Membership in the House of Lords

On 12 June 2006 he was appointed Life peer as Baron Browne of Belmont, of Belmont, County Antrim appointed. On June 24, 2006, he was officially inducted into the House of Lords with the assistance of James Molyneaux, Baron Molyneaux of Killead and Diljit Rana, Baron Rana . He gave his inaugural address in the House of Lords on November 20, 2006. He initially sat there as a crossbencher .

Along with Eileen Paisley and Maurice Morrow, Baron Morrow, he is one of the first three members of the Democratic Unionist Party in the House of Lords.

He cites education, Northern Ireland affairs and Balkan affairs as subjects of political concern. He mentions Brazil , Canada , Croatia , France , Germany , Italy , Montenegro and Serbia as states of particular interest .

He regularly speaks up and takes part in votes. In July 2012, on the second reading of the Finance Bill , he spoke about deficits in the implementation of election promises in the period since 2010. In 2012, he spoke there several times on the subject of energy policy . In June 2013 he spoke out clearly against it during the two-day reading of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill .

Brown's attendance on meeting days is in the medium to regular range.
