The Wallburg Chrobry is an early Polish castle in the Lower Silesian town of Szprotawa (formerly German Sprottau ) in the district of Iława ( German  Eulau ). It is located in the Bobertal in the nature reserve Slavic Park .

history

It is very likely that the castle is identical to the Ilva castle of the Dadosanen , which in 1000 was the place of the meeting of the Polish Duke Bolesław Chrobry with the German Emperor Otto III. on whose journey to the grave of the canonized Adalbert from Prague to Gniezno was. Hence the current name of the facility.

investment

Its surface is approx. 4 hectares and the height approx. 6 meters. It is a polygonal building with clear regularity and a steep slope. In the vicinity of the castle there are quarries and moors, nowadays partially dried up.
It is one of the largest of its kind in Poland.

Until 1945 the property was called "Nonnenbuschberg", because the area was formerly part of the local Magdalenenkloster. Since May 30, 2007, the Wallburg became a cultural monument within the aforementioned nature reserve at the request of the Lower Silesian Heath Association.

Archaeological excavations

Vice-Rector Gloger described the ground monument as a hill fort from the Polish period before the German colonization, but does not give any investigations.

Maciej Boryna from the Muzeum Ziemi Szprotawskiej found medieval ceramic material on the object and is of the opinion that this castle complex was either never completed or was only used for a short time.

In the vicinity there are smaller cultural-archaeological monuments that could be related to the Wallburg.
