The pilgrimage chapel Sontga Fossa ( Rhaeto-Romanic in the idiom Sursilvan for “chapel to the holy grave”) is a chapel in Sevgein in the municipality of Ilanz / Glion in the Surselva in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . It stands on a hill above the village.

history

inner space

According to an inscription above the door that has now disappeared, the chapel was built in 1679. It was consecrated on July 7, 1683. The first extension or extension of the building to the current situation took place in 1736. In 1774, under the direction of Giovanni Antonio Baroggi from Dardin, the choir was shortened to make way for an extension of the nave. In addition, the ship and choir were increased. At this time there were large pilgrimages with around 5,000 pilgrims a year who asked the Pietà for help and consolation. The chapel was renovated from 1973 to 1976.

Today the chapel traditionally celebrates August 1st.

construction

The baroque , west-facing chapel is around 14 meters long and 11 meters wide. The gable roof is provided with a roof turret and an onion helmet. The larger of the two bells dates from 1656 and hung in Danis-Tavanasa until 1901 .

The interior consists of a nave vaulted with a barrel and a flat closed choir with a cross vault. The wall paintings in the choir date from around 1679.

The three wooden altars and the paintings date from the second half of the 18th century; the Pietà of the high altar from around 1680. In the north wall of the nave is the burial chapel separated by a grille; the figures in it are from the 17th century.
