The pilgrimage church of Beata Vergine dei Miracoli ( German  Holy Virgin of Miracles ) is a church in Saronno in Lombardy , Italy . The pilgrimage church of the Archdiocese of Milan bears the title of a minor basilica . It was built in two phases at the beginning and end of the 16th century in the styles of the Renaissance and Baroque .

history

On the occasion of a miraculous healing of the sick, probably around 1460, construction of the church began in 1498 instead of three oratorios . The building was probably completed by the architect Giovanni Antonio Amadeo including the Tiburios in the Renaissance style in 1505. The 47 meter high bell tower was built next to it by Paolo della Porta between 1511 and 1516. From 1525 to 1545 the dome vaults were decorated with large and important frescoes by Bernardino Luini and Gaudenzio Ferrari . There were also works by the sculptors Andrea da Milano and Giulio Oggioni.

In 1556, Vincenzo Seregni began the expansion work to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims . The new church was planned as a three-aisled basilica with five bays . Seregni himself directed the work up to the third yoke. When it was time to demolish the small Chapel of Our Lady of Miracles, construction was halted.

After Charles Borromeo's pastoral visit in 1570, construction was resumed, and in 1581 he moved the holy image from the chapel to the interior of the church. Pellegrino Tibaldi was in charge of the final work. In 1578 he designed the magnificent facade, the construction of which lasted from 1596 to 1613 under Lelio Buzzi and Jacopo Borroni. The upper part of the facade is a work by Carlo Buzzi from 1630, but was not implemented until 1666. The small clock tower that sits above the building in the square was built in 1594.

Pope Pius XI awarded the church the title of minor basilica in 1923.
