Walnut Grove is located on the railway line and the road leading from Mankato (Minnesota) to Pierre ( South Dakota leads). The municipality mark covers 2.69 square kilometers.
history
Walnut Grove was founded by Lars Hanson in 1870 and is named after the walnut trees on nearby Plum Creek. In 1873 the place received a school, in 1874 a church.
Walnut Grove is also home to one of the many Laura Ingalls Wilder museums. The author Laura Ingalls Wilder spent part of her childhood in this place from 1874 and processed her memories in the book Laura and her friends (English title: On the Banks of Plum Creek ), the third volume from the book series Our Little Farm . The television series Our Little Farm (English title: Little House on the Prairie ), based on this template, largely takes place in Walnut Grove.
Through the portrayal by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Walnut Grove became the epitome of a typical small town in the American Midwest and thus has a role comparable to that of Gopher Prairie in Sinclair Lewis .
