Waltard

Waltard (also Walthard, Walther ; * around 960; † August 12, 1012 at Giebichenstein Castle ) was Archbishop of Magdeburg from June 22 to August 12, 1012 .

Life

His parents were the nobleman Erp von Meyendorf , probably from the Haolden clan, and Amulrad (also Amilrath ), a countess of Marsleben . His brother was Liudolf, who from 1016 has been granted county rights in the Büren , Lippstadt and Soest area . His sister Amulrad married Count Konrad von Morsleben and Horneburg and became the mother of Pope Clemens II. She bequeathed the village of Olvenstedt to the church in Magdeburg .

Waltard had been a canon of the Hochstift since 981 and a prepositus in Magdeburg from 984 .

His election as archbishop by the cathedral chapter in 1004 was rejected by King Heinrich II for unknown reasons. He was only able to take office in 1012, but died after just under two months. During this time he was very active in Ostpolitik, in close collaboration with Bernhard I from Billung , in which he showed himself to be very “friendly to Poland”.

Waltard was buried in the cathedral church in Magdeburg. A very important collection of books, priestly implements and other things were scattered by unsaved hands when he died so unexpectedly.
