Mars life

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marsleben is a desert around two kilometers northwest of Quedlinburg and an important archaeological site in Saxony-Anhalt . The former village complex is part of the Quedlinburg desert and was located below the Petersberg on the Zapfenbach.

history

The historic village of Marsleben was mentioned as early as 800 and existed between the 8th and 15th centuries . Among other things, it supplied the Ottonian Palatinate and the Quedlinburg Imperial Monastery as well as the St. Wiperti Monastery with food, textiles and building materials (sandstone).

archeology

In the course of an emergency excavation during the expansion of Bundesstraße 6 , a group of over 200 people from the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology in Halle (Saale) uncovered a total of 80 hectares of which the former village of Marsleben (site VII) was approximately 40,000 m². The remains of stone houses, cellars, a ministerial courtyard, several wells, the village fortifications and secret passages were excavated. Almost 1 million finds were recovered and over 30,000 findings were documented. In the vicinity of the settlement there are also prehistoric settlement sites from the Neolithic Age (ribbon ceramic nave, dated around 5,500 BC) and the Roman Empire (iron smelting furnaces).

Perspectives

The village of Marsleben is currently being reconstructed virtually in a project by the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.
