Walter Aston, 1st Lord Aston of Forfar (before July 9, 1584 , † August 13, 1639 ) was an Anglo-Scottish nobleman and diplomat.

He was the eldest surviving son and heir of the wealthy landowner Sir Edward Aston, of Tixall in Staffordshire († 1597), and his second wife Anne Lucy, daughter of Sir Thomas Lucy, of Charlecote in Warwickshire . He was baptized in Charlecote on July 9, 1584.

On the occasion of the coronation of King James I , he was made Knight of the Bath in 1603 .

On May 22, 1611 he was awarded the title Baronet , of Tixhall in the County of Stafford, in the Baronetage of England . From 1620 to 1625 he was the English ambassador to Spain , where he converted to the Catholic faith and, in particular, negotiated the engagement of the future King Charles I with the Spanish Infanta Maria Anna . Under King Charles I he became gentleman of the King's Privy Chamber and was raised to Lord Aston of Forfar in the Peerage of Scotland on November 28, 1627 . From 1635 to 1638 he was again active as the English ambassador to Spain.

He died in 1639 and was buried in St Mary's Church in Stafford .

Marriages and offspring

When he was still under guardianship after the death of his father in 1597 because of being a minor, he married Anne Barnes without the consent of his guardian. The marriage was therefore annulled in 1600.

Around 1607 he married Gertrude Sadleir († after 1635) daughter of Sir Thomas Sadleir, of Standon in Hertfordshire , from his second marriage to Gertrude Markham. He had ten children with her:
