Walter Bernstein (born June 17, 1901 in Neunkirchen (Saar) ; † March 26, 1981 there ) was a German artist .

Life

Walter Bernstein was born on Hüttenbergstrasse in Neunkirchen . His father Bruno was a master builder in the municipal mayor's office, his mother Amalie nee. Kuhfuß came from Elversberg . The marriage resulted in two other sons.
From 1907 to 1914 Walter Bernstein attended elementary school and high school. On the recommendation of his father, he began an apprenticeship in a Neunkirchen hardware store in 1914 . After another apprenticeship in painting, he enrolled at the Nuremberg School of Applied Arts in autumn 1923 and studied a. a. with Professors Will and Selzer. In 1926 he continued his studies at the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. He studied with Professor Hans Meid , among others . From 1934 to 1938 he was a student of the master's atelier for graphics at the Prussian Academy of the Arts , which was directed by Hans Meid . In 1936 he married Bertha Bodmer, a dancer, in Berlin-Charlottenburg , who died of blood poisoning in 1939. From 1939 to 1944 he was drafted into military service. He took part in the attack on Poland and was used from 1940 with the flak in Hamburg , Rostock , Warnemünde , Lübeck and in the Eifel . Paintings and graphics from the Berlin period that were stored in his apartment in Berlin were destroyed by the war. Some sketches of war scenes and destroyed buildings have been preserved. After a year in captivity, he returned to Saarland in 1946. In 1947 he married Maria Zewe, the sister of the sculptor Otto Zewe . Their son Michael, who was born in 1948, died of muscular atrophy at the age of 32. Walter Bernstein was a founding member of the "Saarland Secession" and participates in exhibitions of the Association of Visual Artists on the Saar . From 1962 he received numerous orders for wall designs throughout the Saarland. In 1970 he was awarded the "Palme d'or" for two pictures at the "Grand prix international de peinture et de sculpture de Monte-Carlo / Illme Salon Bosio". Walter Bernstein died on March 26, 1981.

Numerous murals were created in churches and schools in public spaces. In his panel paintings, themes from mining and the iron industry received the greatest recognition. With his depictions of people working on the Saar, he created typical works with which the post-war generation in Saarland could identify. Many of his works were purchased by the Saarland government.
