Walter Dicks

Walter Wilhelm Dicks (born August 3, 1913 in Cologne ; † September 30, 2012 ) was a German opera singer with a baritone voice .

Life

The son of a concert singer completed an acting and singing training at the University of Music in Cologne . In 1931 he gave his first public performance as a soloist. From 1938 Dicks could be heard in radio broadcasts, including songs by Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf . This was followed by engagements at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, before Walter Felsenstein brought him to the Komische Oper Berlin in 1950 . In 1961 Dicks moved to the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin , where he played and sang numerous classical roles until he left the stage in 1983 under renowned directors and artistic directors such as Gustav Rudolf Sellner , Götz Friedrich and Egon Seefehlner . Dicks, praised by critics for his versatility, was cast in 1982 by Götz Friedrich in a production by Alban Berg's Lulu in two different singing roles: medical councilor and professor. In addition, Dicks , who was awarded the title of chamber singer , gave guest appearances in Japan, the USA, Mexico and the Soviet Union.

In addition, Dicks was active in various social associations. From 1968 he was chairman of the local association Deutsche Oper Berlin as well as soloist representatives and from 1973 to 1983 chairman of the GDBA -Landesverband Berlin.

Dicks was married to the soprano Sonja Schöner . He died on September 30, 2012 at the age of 99.
