Walter Frederick Hunt (also Walter Fred Hunt , Walter F. Hunt , born September 6, 1882 in Cincinnati , Hamilton County , Ohio , † December 19, 1975 in Ann Arbor , Washtenaw County , Michigan ) was an American mineralogist and petrologist .

Life

Family and education

Born in Cincinnati, Walter Frederick Hunt was the son of Henry William Hunt and Ida Hunt, nee Balser. He studied chemistry at the University of Michigan since 1900 . In 1904 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. He then switched to studying mineralogy with Edward H. Kraus , earned a Master of Arts degree in 1905 and received his doctorate in 1915 as a Doctor of Philosophy .

Walter Frederick Hunt, a member of the Congregational Church, married Stella Taft Edwards (1884–1944) on June 3, 1909. The relationship came from the children Marjorie Louise Hunt Muehlig (1911-1972) and Frederick William Hunt (1913-1989). On August 14, 1950, he married Janice A. Goodall in Jackson , Michigan , for the second time . Walter Frederick Hunt died in December 1975 at the age of 93.

Professional background

Walter Frederick Hunt took up a position as an instructor in Petrology in the Department of Mineralogy at the University of Michigan in 1906. In 1918 he was promoted to Associate Professor , in 1922 to Full Professor and in 1933 appointed Chairman of the Department of Mineralogy and Director of the Mineralogical Laboratory. Walter Frederick Hunt was retires in 1951, in 1952 he became professor emeritus .

Walter Frederick Hunt, one of the most renowned mineralogists and petrologists in the United States of his time, served as editor of the American Mineralogist from 1922 to 1957 . The staunch supporter of the Republicans was elected a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America , which awarded him the Roebling Medal in 1957 , the Geological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He was a member of the American Association of University Professors and the Sigma Xi Scientific Association .
