biography

Gugele belonged to the Schnifis ski association and was accepted into the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) at the end of the 1970s, after several years in the junior squad of the Vorarlberg Ski Association . He celebrated his first international successes at the 1981 European Junior Championships in Škofja Loka , where he won two silver medals in slalom and combined. He was then allowed to start in the World Cup for the first time in the last race of the 1980/81 season , but only came in 35th place in this giant slalom in Laax . For the time being, this was Gugele's only World Cup start, but subsequently it was primarily used in the European Cup . While he celebrated a giant slalom victory in Sestriere in the 1981/82 season, a fourth place in Tarvisio was his best European Cup result in the winter of 1982/83 . After that, his results deteriorated noticeably, also due to injuries, and Gugele meanwhile lost his ÖSV squad membership.

In the 1985/86 season , Gugele was back in the European Cup. The best result of the winter was a second place in the giant slalom in Tarvis, and fifth in the discipline classification. In the 1986/87 season he celebrated his second European Cup victory in the giant slalom in Rogla , and also came third in the giant slalom in Villach . This time he was fourth in the discipline ranking and third in the European Cup. He also achieved good results in the Nor-Am Cup in the 1986/87 season , which was reflected in second place in the giant slalom ranking. After these results Gugele came on March 22, 1987 in the giant slalom in Sarajevo for the second time in the World Cup. He finished 15th and won his first World Cup point. In the winter of 1987/88 Gugele continued to compete in the European Cup. He was again third in the overall standings and secured victory in this discipline standings with victory in the Super-G in Sarajevo. At the end of winter he came back to a World Cup. At the Super-G in Saalbach-Hinterglemm on March 24, 1988, he finished ninth - at the same time as Alberto Tomba - and thus his best World Cup result. A little later, Gugele ended his active career.
