Walter Höher (born February 22, 1925 in Schwerte ; † August 22, 2015 there ) was a German teacher and dialect poet.

Life

After attending elementary school in Ergste , Höher attended grammar school in Schwerte. His school years were interrupted from 1943 to 1945 by military service in World War II, in which he was seriously wounded. In 1946 he then graduated from high school. Then he first attended the commercial college and then studied pedagogy for teaching in Dortmund . He later worked as a teacher in Bönen and Kalthof , then from 1968 until his retirement in 1986 as rector of the community secondary school in Ergste; his main teaching areas were German, music and training for young teachers.

Höher was committed to dialect research and was active in various relevant organizations, such as the Märkischer Kreis home association, the Plattdüütscher Schrieverkring in the WHB Münster and the Plattdüütsche Spraokstie in Münster. In addition, he was for many years the managing director and Low German swart of the Ergste homeland association and regularly gave Low German lectures in Low German circles and associations.

He wrote not only Low German essays and contributions for the regional print media, but also radio contributions and Low German song compositions. One of the better-known pieces is the text he wrote in 2008 for the “Südwestfalenlied”, composed by Wilfried Diener.

In radio he was involved in Low German song and text compositions at WDR and in 456 local radio broadcasts on Radio Märkischer Kreis between 1990 and 1996.

Höher died at the age of 90 after a long illness.
