Walter Hauser (born June 11, 1957 in Glarus ) is a Swiss writer and journalist .

Life

Hauser was born in 1957 and grew up in the canton of Glarus . He studied law and obtained a doctorate in law . iur. at the University of Zurich . Since 1985 Hauser has worked as a journalist and editor for various Swiss newspapers. From 1987 to 1992 Hauser was a member of the Cantonal Court of Glarus. Since 1995 he has published several books based on legal historical research.

In bitterness and tears , Hauser describes the background to the mass emigration from Glarus to America in the 19th century. The canton and municipalities supported the departure of impoverished families in order to get rid of welfare costs. The case of 18-year-old homeless Samuel Fässler, whose fate Hauser describes in detail based on his research, is particularly tragic. The young fruit thief from Mühlehorn in Glarus was deported to New York in 1851 after years of imprisonment, where his traces were lost forever.

In his book Der Justizmord an Anna Göldi , Walter Hauser was the first to publish the studbook of Heinrich Ludewig Lehmann, which he found in 2006 during his research together with relatives of Lehmann's living today in Germany. The main characters of the Anna Göldi trial are handwritten in the register, including court clerk Johann Melchior Kubli . The studbook provides evidence that Melchior Kubli handed the secret documents of the Göldi trial to the journalist Lehmann. As a result of this indiscretion, the “witch trial” became public shortly after Anna Göldi was executed in 1782. With this book, in which he rehabilitated the last witch , Hauser achieved a Swiss bestseller. Hauser was the driving force behind the rehabilitation of Anna Göldi, decided by the Glarus District Administrator in 2008. As a founding member and president, Walter Hauser is active on the foundation board of the Anna Göldi Foundation , which campaigns against arbitrariness of justice and for the protection of human rights.

While researching the fire in Glarus in 1861, Hauser came across new documents that indicate that the fire had been started by two young people.
